Download¶
Choose one of the following versions of Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) based on your computer's specifications.
- If your computer is relatively new and has more than 2 GB of RAM, download LMDE 6 "Faye" 64bit.
- If your computer is older and has less than 2 GB of RAM, you might want to look at lighter options like antiX or Puppy Linux because LMDE needs at least 2 GB of RAM. Still want LMDE? LMDE 6 "Faye" 32bit.

Why Choose LMDE?¶
Info
This section gives extra details. You may skip it.
Here are some reasons why LMDE is a great choice compared to other operating systems:
Benefits of LMDE¶
- It uses an LTS (Long-Term Support) kernel, meaning it’s stable and secure for a long time.
- It doesn’t rely on Ubuntu but is based directly on Debian, making it more independent.
- The update process is simpler and less likely to introduce experimental changes.
- It combines Debian’s lightweight and reliable system with a modern and user-friendly interface.
Drawbacks of LMDE¶
- You might find fewer pre-configured packages (like third-party PPAs) than in Ubuntu.
- New versions of some apps can take a bit longer to arrive because Debian tests them thoroughly before releasing them.
Why use Cinnamon?¶
Note
Desktop Environment is all the user interface the desktop has, hence desktop environment.
Cinnamon is the default desktop environment for LMDE, and here’s how it compares to other options:
- GNOME: It has many features but needs a powerful computer to run smoothly. Cinnamon offers a similar look but works much faster, even on older systems.
- MATE: MATE is lightweight and works well on older computers, but it doesn’t have as many modern features as Cinnamon. Cinnamon strikes a great balance between speed and features.
- LXQt: LXQt uses fewer resources, but it’s too simple for most people. Cinnamon is easier to use and has more features.
- XFCE: XFCE is lightweight and stable, but its development is slower and it doesn’t have as many built-in tools as Cinnamon. Cinnamon feels more complete and polished.
- KDE: KDE has improved a lot and is now lightweight, but it can feel too complicated for beginners. Cinnamon is designed to be simple and easy to use, making it perfect for schools and everyday use.
